Hey Sam here from Money Journal with episode 5 of Marketing in Two minutes. Today I’m taking a question from John Biester.
What do you think are the best channels and best ways for creating a following prior to launching your product or service?
I’m glad you asked John. In episode 2 I mentioned the first step you should take is to build an email list and why it’s crucial to do this.
Watch episode 2 if you haven’t done so yet because we’re going to build on how you can do that right now.
An email list is a stronger bet than a social media following when you’re first starting out.
Social reach is limited. It’s common knowledge that Facebook has killed organic reach. If you have a following of 10,000 people, you need to get a ton of likes, shares and comments to even get half of those people to see your post.
Email is tougher to ignore and it hits a very personal space to people.
Building an email list requires 3 things.
- An email marketing tool.
So how do you do you put them all together?
Here are 3 super effective strategies that will grow your list.
1. Guest Blogging
The first is guest blogging. I bet there are bigger sites out there than yours. They’ve built massive audiences. By guest blogging, they get quality content and you get a chance to speak to their audience.
The sites you choose should:
a. Have an active community – so look for the average number of social shares, comments and use traffic estimation tools like Alexa and Similarweb for a ballpark figure.
b. Have your ideal audience that will be interested in your products and services.
Do a Google search for something like:
“Write for us” “your niche keywords”
For example, I could search “write for us” “content marketing”. You’ll see a massive list of pages for guest posting opportunities.
Pitch them a few ideas and start writing. There’s more to guest posting and I’ll get into that if someone asks about it.
2. Use the right pop-ups.
The second is pop-ups. I already discussed which popups you should use in episode 4 so watch that video there and find out how you can use Sumome, Leadpages and Optinmonster to make that easy for you.
3. Joint webinars
The last are joint webinars.
People love webinars because they learn a lot through them for free in under an hour. To get the most out of your webinars, find people or companies with a similar audience as yours and do an exchange.
They can email their people and you can capture those emails as leads and you can email your list and your webinar co-presenter can get them as their leads.
List building is hard work, but it’ll almost always pay off.
